Thornton Lodge

Thornton Lodge offers a base for many and varied visits. If anything is underlined you can click on it and their website will open in a new browser page. Hopefully you'll still have my site open to return to! Dont forget, Thornton Lodge is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, so please check out their website too if you've not been to this beautiful area before - or even if you have, it's a great website and resource.

Walking

For walkers, these can start from the doorstep, or follow one of the many trails nearby—this flexibility works equally for cyclists, who have found the property a useful overnight stop on the Coast to Coast route. I spent some time making a whole page devoted to walks in Wensleydale, with links to helpful pages. (i'm nice like that y'no).

The Wensleydale Creamery

Visit the Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes, home to real Wensleydale Cheese.

Fishing

I've got a whole section of my site devoted to the salmon and other course fishing nearby.

Cycling

I've got bike storage facilities at the house. The Dales are a great place for cycling. Information is provided through two pages on the National Parks website for road bikes and mountain bikes. I have an outside tap and hose for dirty bikes and I've washed/dried kit if needed. There is a safe bike trail in Swaledale along the old railway lines.

Pottery

There are potteries in Askrigg, West Burton and Hawes. The potter at Askrigg has now retired however people might be interested to know about his work and so I have left the link to his page live for anyone interested.

Waterfalls

Wonderful waterfalls can be viewed at Aysgarth, Askrigg and Hardraw. There's also an amazing waterfall trail at Ingleton which I really love. I'm adding MALHAM COVE and MALHAM TARN here as they're amazing too and are features to see in their own right.

Makers

There is a Rope Makers at Hawes and a Candle Makers at Wensley.

Caves

Further afield, there are caves to explore at Ingleton (White Scar and Ingleborough)  and Pately Bridge.

Castles, Abbeys and Cathedrals

Castles, Abbeys and Cathedrals can be visited at Bolton, Jervaulx, Middleham, Richmond, Skipton, Ripon and York

Auctions

For antiques enthusiasts, Leyburn is home to Tennants - the largest Auction House in the North of England. They also have the garden rooms there with events, a tea shop and restaurant.

Shopping

For shopaholics, there are many speciality boutiques in Darlington and Harrogate. Whilst fabulous woollen creations can be purchased in Muker
